WHAT IS IT?

Developed in Oklahoma, hydraulic fracturing has been an important part of oil and natural gas production for over 50 years. It’s the process of using water, sand and additives under high pressure to fracture shale rock formations, unlocking trapped oil and natural gas that would otherwise be impossible to reach.

IS IT REGULATED?

Yes. There are many rules and regulations in place that all oil and natural gas companies abide by to ensure safe, responsible production while protecting our environment.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Hydraulic fracturing has been largely responsible for America’s increased oil and natural gas production. When combined with horizontal drilling, the technique of hydraulically fracturing the formation loosens up trapped oil and natural gas resources allowing for them to flow more freely and be more easily produced.

WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE?

While water still remains the most efficient medium for creating fractures in relatively impermeable formations such as shale, new technologies and innovations are on the horizon. Companies and researchers are exploring other alternative and abundant liquids that could one day replace water in the hydraulic fracturing process. The use of CO2 is currently being tested as a possible alternative.
